SSC HISTORY

Welcome to the wonderful world of Strawberry Shortcake. The Strawberry Shortcake character (American Greetings Creation) originally made as a greeting card design; little did anyone know it would turn out to be a huge success. The year was 1979 and Strawberry Shortcake Collectors never looked back since.

It began in Strawberryland, where strawberries grow all year long. There lives a little girl called Strawberry Shortcake. This description came from a booklet of the Strawberry Shortcake toy line produced by Kenner from 1980. Kenner manufactured the dolls and accessories from the beginning. Strawberry Shortcake, Orange Blossom, Blueberry Muffin, Huckleberry Pie, Lemon Meringue, Raspberry Tart, Apricot with Hopsalot Bunny, Apple Dumplin with Tea Time Turtle, Purple Pieman with Berry Bird. They were all scented like their names. In all, there were nearly 50 dolls made, (rag dolls, baby dolls, six inch dolls ect).

Starting in 1981 Kenner made all dolls with pets. In all by 1983 the "regular line" consisted of 19 dolls (5 who were international friends and their names were Cafe Ole with Burrito Donkey, Mint Tulip with Marshland Mallard, Almond Tea with Marza Panda, Crepe Suzette with Eclair Poodle, Lem and Ada with Sugarwoofer Dog)

By 1984 Kenner had produced 64 miniatures and 18 deluxe miniature sets. In addition to accessories for both dolls and minis, Kenner also made a huge house called The Strawberry Shortcake Berry Happy Home. Originally the house was not sold with any furniture, but was later sold with basic furniture. Add on sets (which are really expensive to purchase now) were also available to complete the house. The party Pleaser line made in 1984 consisted of 10 dolls who wore fancy party dresses and coordinating party pets. Two new dolls were introduced into the line: Peach Blush with Melonie belle and Plum Puddin with elderberry owl. The party pleaser dolls were Strawberry Shortcake, Apple Dumplin, Angel Cake, Cherry Cuddler, Cafe Ole, Almond Tea, Orange Blossom, Angel Cake, Peach Blush and Plum Puddin. Also in 1984 five Sweet Sleeper dolls were introduced and they were Strawberry Shortcake, Blueberry Muffin, Lemon Meringue, Raspberry Tart and Orange Blossom. They had eyes that opened and closed and came with sleeping bags and sleeping pets. The boxes were made to resemble little bedrooms.

There were also 3 houses that came out for the minis and they were:
Strawberry Shortcake House which came with a red table, red stove, red bed, red ladder, pink light, and a pink blanket for the bed. Blueberry Muffin Garden House which came with a tan rake, tan shovel, tan basket, walkway, yellow blanket, large blueberry, pink wheelbarrow and a tray of blueberries that fits into the wheelbarrow. Raspberry Soda Shoppe which came with a cash register, fan, raspberry shaped bush, counter, red table, pink rug, cart.

Finally in 1985, the final line of Kenner dolls, called Berrykins by collectors were produced. These 6 dolls had long hair that flowed to their feet, came with a critter instead of a pet, and fancier outfits. A new creation added to the Berrykin series was Banana Twirl and her banana Berrykin. She is the most expensive and harder to find Berrykin now. They also had a princess to help the Berrykins. The Berry Princess was similar to a fashion doll with long blond hair and a beautiful pink and white dress.

In 1991, a company called Toy Headquarters (THQ) obtained the rights to produce the new Strawberry Shortcake dolls. These re-released dolls had a updated look and feel to them with long styled hair, larger eyes and really cute outfits. These dolls weren't as popular as the originals but are still loved by most collectors. And I have also noticed that lately they have become a popular item for collectors once again in this new era with Orange Blossom seeming to be the hardest of all to find. The dolls that were released were: Strawberry Shortcake Berry Best Party, Strawberry Shortcake Berry Sweet Sleep Over, STrawberry Shortcake Berry Beauty Shop, Strawberry Shortcake Berry Beach Park, Blueberry Muffin Berry Neat Eats, Lime Chiffon Dance And Berry Cise, Lemon Meringue Berry Fun Shopping, Orange Blossom Dancin Berry Fun. These 5 1/2 inch dolls came on large cards, not boxes like the originals and came with an extra outfit which had a cardboard doll displaying it. No pets were included in this line. They also came with their own comb.

There was also a doll that was produced by Those Characters From Cleveland that was part of a promotion from Little Debbie Snacks Cakes. This doll came in a special box with wrist tag.

In 1997, American Greetings released stickers and greeting cards with Strawberry Shortcake's picture, but not dolls. Now in 2002-03 Strawberry Shortcake is finally making a comeback once again for new generations. I was about 7 when Strawberry Shortcake first came out and now my daughter is that age and will get to enjoy something that I grew up with. I think that is really neat!

I'm going to list some of the prices your vintage items may be worth now. I will try and include the rarest of pieces also. Also, prices may differ according to area as well as condition and availability.

Some information for this page has been acquired from More Strawberry Shortcake; An Unauthorized Handbook and Price Guide 1999 by Jan Lindenberger and Jennifer Bowles, and The Cream of Strawberry Shortcake Collectibles; An Unauthorized Handbook and Price Guide by Jan Lindenberger with Jennifer Bowles 1999. I believe these are the 2 best Strawberry Shortcake books to date. They seem to give the most up to date information, and include lot's of wonderful pictures of each collectible. CHARACTERS

Strawberry Shortcake was the first doll that was produced in 1979. She has 12 regular minis and 3 deluxe minis. Her pet is Custard the cat. Strawberry Shortcake was made in the First and Second Edition Dolls. She was also made in the Party Pleaser, Sweet Sleeper, Berrykins, Blow Kiss, Rag Doll, Vinyl Head Rag Doll, Jc Penny Exclusive Rag Doll and the Berry Babies. Also Custard her cat was made into a plush toy. There were 3 different sizes. They all come with name tags

Blueberry Muffin was released in 1979. Both in First and Second Edition Dolls. Her pet is Cheesecake Mouse. She was made in the Berry Babies and Sweet Sleeper dolls. She also has 3 minis and 1 deluxe mini. Her pet Cheesecake was made into a plush toy and only in 1 size. He comes with a name tag. Blueberry Muffin was one of the dolls that was not made into a rag doll. She was also re released in 1991 by TCFC. She is my favorite behind Strawberry Shortcake

Lemon Meringue was first released in 1979. She was made into the First and Second Edition Dolls. Her pet is Frappe the frog. She was made into the Berry Babies, Blow Kiss, Sweet Sleeper and Rag Doll Dolls. She has 4 regular minis and 1 deluxe mini. She was also re released in 1991 by TCFC. Her pet frog was also made into a plush toy. He comes with a name tag

Raspberry Tart was first released in 1979. She was made into the First and Second Edition Dolls. She has her pet monkey Rhubarb. She was made into the Sweet Sleeper and Rag Doll dolls. She has 4 regular minis and 1 deluxe mini. She was also re released in 1991 by TCFC. Her pet Rhubarb was also made into a plush toy. He comes with a name tag, and is hard to find

Orange Blossom was first released in 1979. She was made into the First and Second Edition Dolls. Her pet is Marmalade Butterfly. She was also made into the Party Pleaser, Sweet Sleeper, Berrykins, Blow Kiss, Rag Doll and Berry Babies Dolls. She has 2 regular minis and 1 deluxe mini. Her pet Marmalade was also made into a plush toy. He comes with a name tag, and is very rare and hard to find

Apple Dumplin was first released in 1979. She was made into the First and Second Edition Dolls. Her pet is Tea Time Turtle who was made into 2 styles a hard shell pet and vinyl pet. She was made into the Rag Doll (who comes with a small tea time turtle plush pet attached) and Party Pleaser Dolls. She has 3 regular minis. Her pet Tea Time Turtle was made into another plush toy who was larger then the one with the Ragdoll. He comes with a name tag

Apricot was first released in 1979. She was made into the First and Second Edition Dolls. Her pet is Hopsalot the bunny. She was made into a Blow Kiss Doll and Rag Doll (which also came with a small hopsalot plush attached). She has 3 regular minis and 1 deluxe mini. Besides the Rag Doll plush, Hopsalot was made into 2 other Plush toys. One is small and one is large. They both come with a name tag

Huckleberry Pie was first released in 1979. He was made into the First and Second Edition Dolls. His pet is Pupcake the dog. Huckleberry Pie is the one boy in Strawberryland. He was made into the Vinyl Head Rag Doll and Jc Penny Doll Rag Doll. He has 2 regular minis. His pet Pupcake was also made into a plush toy. There was 3 sizes; small, med, large. They come with a name tag

Sour Grapes (part of the villians of Strawberryland) was released in 1982. Her pet is Dreggs the snake. She was not made into any other dolls. She does have 2 regular minis. There were also no plush pets made either

Purple Pie Man (part 2 of the villians, Sour Grapes side kick) was released in 1979. His pet is Berry Bird (Cackle). He was not made into any other dolls. He does have 2 regular minis. There were no plush pets made either

Angel Cake was released in 1981. Her pet is Souffle the skunk. Besides the regular sized doll with pet, she was also made into a Blow Kiss Doll and Party Pleaser. She has 3 regular minis and 1 deluxe mini. Her pet Souffle was made into a plush toy. He comes with a name tag, and is hard to find

Lime Chiffon was released in 1981. Her pet is Parfait Parrot. Besides the regular sized doll with pet, she was made into a Rag Doll and was also re issued in 1991 by TCFC. She has 3 regular minis and 1 deluxe mini. Her pet Parfait was also made into a plush toy. He is very rare and hard to find

Cherry Cuddler was released in 1981. Her pet is Gooseberry. Besides being the regular sized doll with pet, she was made into a Rag Doll and Party Pleaser. She has 3 regular minis and 1 deluxe mini. Her pet Gooseberry was made into a plush toy. He comes with a name tag

Cafe Ole was released in 1983. She is part of the International Friends Series. Her pet is Burrito Donkey. Besides the regular sized doll with pet, she was made into a Party Pleaser Doll. She has 3 regular minis and 1 deluxe mini. There were no plush pets made

Almond Tea was released in 1983. She is part of the International Friends Series. Her pet is Marza Panda. Besides the regular sized doll with pet, she was made into a Party Pleaser Doll. She has 3 regular minis and 1 deluxe mini. There were no plush pets made

Crepe Suzette was released in 1983. She is part of the International Friends Series. Her pet is Eclair Poodle. She has 2 regular minis and 1 deluxe mini. There were no plush pets made

Lem (boy) and Ada (girl) were released in 1983. They are twins. They are part of the International Friends Series. Their pet is Sugarwoofer the dog. They have 1 mini that is rare and hard to find. There were no plush pets made

Butter Cookie was first released in 1981. Her pet is Jelly Bear. She has 2 regular minis and 1 deluxe mini. Her pet Jelly Bear was made into a plush toy. He comes with a name tag

Peach Blush was released in 1984. She was never released as a regular sized doll only a Party Pleaser with pet and Berrykin. Her pet is Mellonie Belle. She has 2 regular sized minis and 1 deluxe mini. Her pet Mellonie Belle was made into a plush toy. She comes with a name tag. Peach Blush is one of the rarest and most expensive to collect

Plum Puddin was released in 1984. When she was first created she was made into a boy doll. She was never released as a regular sized doll only a Party Pleaser with pet and Berrykin. Her pet is Elderberry Owl. She has 2 regular sized minis and 1 deluxe mini. Her pet was never made into a plush toy

Berry Princess was first released in 1985. She is larger and looks more like a Barbie Doll. She is part of the Berrykin Series. She has no pet or minis

Another doll to mention which is very rare is Banana Twirl. She was released in 1985 as a Berrykin. She is considered to be the most rare of Strawberry Shortcake Collectors. She has no pets or minis

Also one more would be Baby Without A Name. She was only made into a Blow Kiss (which you may recognize from the movie) Doll. Her pet is Figboot. She was released in 1984. She came with a wrist band so her new owner could name her. There were no minis produced. Her pet Figboot is a purple dinosaur

CHARACTERS BIOS

STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE AND CUSTARD

Strawberry Shortcake lives in a strawberry house that grew out of the ground especially for her. Her day begins and ends with a smile, with laughter in between. Her world extends as far as the next strawberry patch, where she happily tends to her larger than life berries. She's usually accompanied by Custard, her polka dot kitten. Together, they criss-cross a lovely, imaginary land, picking strawberries and making jam and other treats from the harvest. Strawberry enjoys a simple country life. Her thought sand work are uncomplicated. She's direct, honest and somewhat naive. And, like all optimists, she rarely sees beyond the next sunbeam. As long as there are plants to be cared for and friend to share them with, all's right with the word for Strawberry Shortcake.

HUCKLEBERRY PIE AND PUPCAKE

Huckleberry Pie lives just across the valley from Strawberry Shortcake in a house that's usually somewhat untidy. Since huckleberries grow wild, they require little tending, providing Huckleberry plenty of time for playing or just being lazy. He spends most of his time fishing in the Soda Pop Stream with his mischievous dog, Pupcake.

BLUEBERRY MUFFIN AND CHEESECAKE

Blueberry Muffin lacks common sense, is forgetful and is always in a slight tizzy, but despite her endearing shortcomings, she's loved by all. She's generous to a fault, is a gifted story teller and is never too busy to help with a problem. Cheesecake, her pet mouse, follows her everywhere, usually to clean up after her.

APPLE DUMPLIN AND TEATIME TURTLE

Apple Dumplin is the baby of the group. Most of her days are spent with one or another of the Strawberry Kids who look after her and play with her. She's too little to help with chores, but she's content to watch everyone else go about their business. Her closest companion is Tea-time turtle.

RASPBERRY TART AND RHUBARB

Raspberry's an outspoken little girl with a quick mind and a quicker mouth, who's words often gets her into trouble. She means well and is usually quite sweet, but somewhat lacking in the tact department. Her pal, Rhubarb the monkey is equally adept at starting arguments and playing practical jokes.

ORANGE BLOSSOM AND MARMALADE

Despite her good looks, Orange Blossom is a shy little person who tends to downplay her own appearance and accomplishments. She has an artistic talent and her expertise lends beauty to many parts of Strawberryland. Her pet butterfly, Marmalade, is just as pretty and as quiet as Orange Blossom

APRICOT AND HOPSALOT

Apricot is an outgoing and fun loving toddler with many remarkable words in her limited vocabulary. She surprises everyone with such words as "phenomenal, erudite, diplomacy" and the like. Her constant companion is Hopsalot, a well meaning but rather clumsy white rabbit.

LEMON MERINGUE AND FRAPPE FROG

Lemon Meringue is a very feminine little lady who often spends hours primping and preening until she feels she looks "just so." She can be a little overbearing and prissy at times, but quite often she is right. Frappe Frog is her best pal because he in no way competes with her beauty.

LIME CHIFFON AND PARFAIT PARROT

Some would call Lime Chiffon a dreamer. She prefers to think of herself as simply having high aspirations. She loves to dance, but is shy and a bit of a longer. As a matter of fact, the main reason why Parfait and Lime Chiffon have become so close is that Parfait does most of the talking for the two of them.

ANGEL CAKE AND SOUFFLE

Angel Cake's name is indicative of the person. She is truly a little angel. Lost causes and unfortunate creatures are her forte, and she will go out of her way to aid either. She's always helping someone, or dropping a pleasant words. Souffle, Angel Cake's pet skunk, is quite happy to help with whatever Angel Cake is doing.

CHERRY CUDDLER AND GOOSEBERRY

Cherry Cuddler is a lovable little toddler who likes nothing better than to give and receive great big, giant hugs. She is outgoing, a real extrovert and is not above accepting a challenge. She often tried to do things far beyond her years, but her pet Gooseberry faithfully follows the little toddler about and honks at the slightest sign of danger.

BUTTER COOKIE AND JELLY BEAR

Butter Cookie is the youngest of all the Strawberryland kids. Butter can't even toddle yet, just crawl. And what ever direction Butter Cookies' crawling in usually leads to food. Her pet's name is Jelly Bear, an active little guy with a weight problem.

PURPLE PIEMAN AND THE BERRY BIRD

The peculiar Purple Pieman of Porcupine Peak is the crafty, yet laughable villain of Strawberryland. Much of his evil is perpetrated by his basic laziness. His antics are just enough to raise eyebrows without striking fear into even the gentlest of hearts. He is aided in his sinister yet silly schemes by the Berry Birds.

SOUR GRAPES AND DREGGS

Sour Grapes is the snooty female counterpart to the Purple Pieman. They join forces many times in an effort to spoil the kids attempts at simple fun and good times. Usually, their villainous efforts fail cause they try to outdo each other. Her sidekick is a lowly snake named Dreggs, who she affectionately calls "her humble serpent."

LUCKY BUG

Lucky Bug is a lady bug who hovers close to Strawberry Shortcake at all times. True to her name, Lucky Bug brings good fortune to Strawberry. Although she can't speak, she listens with great patience to Strawberry and her friends and communicates with an occasional "buzz"

CREPES SUZETTE AND ECLAIR

Crepes Suzette strives mightily to see that everything in Strawberryland is perfect, her appearance, daily chores, or even her friendships. She is a little too caught up in cleanliness, as is her French poodle eclair, but she is the outstanding chef in the group.

ALMOND TEA AND MARZA PANDA

Almond Tea is the deep thinker and philosopher of Strawberryland wit the rare ability to see into the future. The roly poly Marza Panda emulates her in every way tub one, his looks into Thu future are never correct.

CAFE OLE AND BURRITO

Cafe Ole is simply amazing at all kinds of crafts but generally is quite laid back and takes things just as they come along. Burrito is her industrious burro who ties to hard he often gets forward mixed up with reverse.

MINT TULIP AND MARSH MALLARD

Mint Tulip is the gardener of Strawberryland, but she only raises flowers. She gets along well with everyone, has a persuasive personalty, but has never gotten marsh Mallard to swim.

LEM AND ADA

Even though Lem is a boy and Ada is a girl, the only twins in Strawberryland get along perfectly. In fact, when one begins a sentence, the other always finishes it. The two consider themselves slightly upper crust and totally spoil their lovable pet Sugar Woofer

PLUM PUDDIN

Plum Puddin's a studious little boy with an engineer's mind. He's not as much interested in tending his crop as in figuring out how and why it grows. Few practical problems arise in Strawberryland that Plum Puddin's incapable of solving.

FLITTERBIT

Flitterbit wings her way through Strawberryland and acts as a quiet companion to all the Strawaberry kids.

T N HONEY

T. N. HONEY is a curious child of British extraction, with a very active imagination and an irrepressible urge to experiment. It seems she is always experimenting with conventional gardening techniques. She tried hybrids and crossbreeds and generally attempts the impossible in her search for the perfect "something new" The other kids are amazed and amused by her efforts.

GUACA-MOLE

A Mexican mole with a not so low profile who is Strawberry Shortcake's underground connection in Big Apple City.

HORSE RADISH

An old nag who doesn't have much of an opinion but provides plenty of basic transportation for the Strawberryland kids

COCO NUTWORK

A nervous network chief who really gets wrapped up in the business, yet somehow manages to accomplish every task at hand.
